Musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging has been used for many years, but recent improvements in technology has significantly increased its usefulness in identifying abnormal changes in soft tissue structures such as muscle, tendon, nerve, ligament and bone surface. It is especially useful in identifying those problems which, before, would require an expensive MRI.
The ultrascan takes only a few minutes, is extremely safe, and yields immediate information. For those who are claustrophobic and cannot tolerate an MRI, this is ideal. MRI is still the best option for most spine and brain imaging, but for determining damage or pathology of peripheral structures such as rotator cuff, biceps tendon, elbow tendons and ligaments, ankle tendon and ligaments, knee ligaments, etc., the ultrascan is the best, most cost effective choice. At Langford, we provide imaging, when indicated, for our patients at no charge, in order to expedite effective treatment. We also use ultrasound imaging to educate you regarding when you are using muscles correctly, such as deep back muscles, or abdominal muscles, and pelvic floor muscles, which can also speed learning and recovery.
