Sports injuries can be like any other orthopedic injury. The difference is the person injured. An athlete is generally in better physical condition, and if injured during the season, they usually want to get back to their sport as soon as possible.
With the athlete we provide support for the injured tissue, reduce inflammation, and teach the athlete proper care of the injury to allow them to return to play if the injury is such that this is feasible without resulting in more damage. Once the season is over we can undergo more extensive rehab and changes in technique, etc., that protect the area and allow healing. Some injuries, however, do not allow return to the sport quickly without compromising long term health. For those we start full rehab right away, and advise not to return to athletic activity until they meet goals that indicate a safe return is possible. We are able to look at injuries using our musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging equipment to determine the extent of a soft tissue injury and help us make and accurate determination of the severity of an injury when clinical tests alone are equivocal.
